His paper and his presentation contained detailed explanations of flaws the encryption used by Adobe's eBook electronic book format. Immediately after his presentation, FBI agents arrested Sklyarov for violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998. This law makes the manufacture, distribution, and trafficking of an access control circumvention device illegal. Apparently under Adobe's and the FBI's overly broad interpretation, Sklyarov's presentation was considered a circumvention device. There have been prior instances of DMCA violations. Sklyarov's is unique in two ways. 1) This is the first arrest under the DMCA, which recently became a criminal law. Previous violations were handled as civil suits, whereas Sklyarov is charged with a felony. 2) Sklyarov is a foreign national (he is Russian), and the act he committed is not illegal is any other nation. His arrest under this law has become an international incident, with stories reported in worldwide news outlets such as the BBC. Our complaints about the DMCA are two-fold. First of all, it is a glaring breech of our first ammendment rights. Sklyarov, and a previous violator, Dr. Edward Felten of Princeton University, have respectively been arrested for and barred from presenting academic results at research conferences. Monied interests in various industries have taken these actions in fearful self-defense, to the detriment of science and technology. Secondly, the DMCA is materially harmful to society. Under the DMCA it is criminal to discover and openly discuss a flaw in a security system which is designed to control access to information. The net effect of this provision is that flaws in such systems are 'protected' from ever being fixed. The result is an accumulation of security systems which don't secure anything, due to their flaws, placing people at risk of such treacherous acts as identity theft and fraud. Our belief is that the proper way to handle a flaw in a security system is not to punish the discoverer, but to publicly announce the flaw, so that it is fixed as soon as possible. This opposing policy is often refered to as 'full disclosure'. Our priorities are as follows: 1) Free Dmitry Sklyarov (even if this requires a presidential pardon) 2) Repeal the DMCA (it is harmful to science and society) INFORMATION ----------- When: Monday, June 23, 2001 from 11 AM to 1 PM Central Time Where: At the loop post office between 100 and 200 S. Dearborn, which is across the street from the federal building. Where: At the public plaza across from the federal building downtown. The address is: Everett McKinley Dirksen Federal Building 219 South Dearborn Street Suite 905 Chicago, IL 60604 and we will be meeting near the big orange Calder statue at 11:00 on Monday morning. This is what the statue looks like: http://www.a1focus.com/arch/calder.htm From there we'll move to a higher-profile location in the plaza for our demonstration. If you come late, just look for the people with the signs. DEMONSTRATION ------------- These are the issues and the ONLY issues we will be raising: 1) Free Dmitry Sklyarov 2) Repeal the DMCA (details below). IMPORTANT NOTE: *** We must avoid raising anti-Adobe issues *** The EFF and Adobe have agreed to talk in exchange for calling off the anti-Adobe protests. We are taking their actions in good faith and focusing on other equally, if not more important issues. If you would like to protest Adobe's actions leading to Sklyarov's arrest, please, organize another protest. Also note that at this point there is very little that Adobe can do for Dmitry Sklyarov, as the case is now in the hands of the FBI, the Attorney General John Ashcroft, and the U.S. judicial system. The best we can hope for from Adobe is a public apology and a promise not to pursue individuals under the DMCA in the future. ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE: *** We are *NOT* protesting the FBI or the FBI's action in this case. They are "doing their jobs" by following the DMCA which *is* in effect. Protesters are specifically requested NOT to bring anti-FBI signs or shirts to the protest. We currently don't have any enemies other than the DMCA and we like to keep it that way. With the current climate around the country regarding demonstrations we are not willing to jeopardize the freedom and lives of our fellow protesters or Dmitry himself via our own or another person's actions. People unwilling to abide by these rules and goals should *NOT* come to this protest. Finally, we will abide by ANY REQUEST the Chicago Police Department makes of us, including moving our location, not handing out leaflets, etc. We are not here to cause unrest -- we're here to disseminate information regarding Dmitry and the DMCA *only*. Again, if you can't abide by that, please don't jeopardize the dignity of this group. WHAT YOU CAN DO AS A DEMONSTRATOR --------------------------------- FIRST of all, if you intend to join us for the Chicago protests, subscribe to the sklyarov-chicago mailing list here: http://ufo.chicago.il.us/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/sklyarov-chicago/ This is where we will be discussing our plans and strategies. PLEASE CONFIRM WITH US if you expect to be there so that we have a general idea how many list subscribers will show up downtown. SECONDLY, PLEASE MAKE A SIGN FOR THE PROTEST. Make it big and as sturdy as possible, with big lettering and a short slogan (4 words or less) like, "FREE DMITRY" or "REPEAL THE DMCA" or "CONSUMERS HAVE NO RIGHTS". If you can, make two or three. I recommend heavy tagboard and a wooden handle. Even cardboard would make a sturdier back -- but make sure you put white paper on it first for MAXIMUM VISIBILITY. No anti Adobe, FBI, or other law-enforcement slogans, please. THIRDLY: Do you have legal access to a printer or a copier? We have handout posters and information available here: http://two-bit.northpark.edu/free-sklyarov/ Pictures of Dmitry and his family are available here: http://www.eff.org/IP/DMCA/US_v_Sklyarov/Graphics/ If you make a poster, save it in a .jpg format and email it to pedro@tastytronic.net so that others may use them. Pedro will be printing some 8 1/2 by 11 handouts with the poster on one side and DMCA information like the Reuter's feed or our own press release on the other side. Hand people the flyers with the poster side up -- when they turn it over, they'll see the article. The Reuter's article will be in the same directory as the poster .jpgs. Use bright neon paper for handouts if you can. If you can print some posters or signs, please do so and let the sklyarov-chicago list know so that we can coordinate our efforts! FOURTHLY, Please dress appropriately for a public demonstartion. No obscenities or "innapropriate dress". T-shirts and shorts are fine -- casual clothing is better. As sad as it is, our appearance WILL have an effect on our audience. We want them to hear about this injustice -- today is not the day to be shocking or make a fashion statement. SIXTH, If you have personal contacts in any of the news media around town, contact them and send them the Reuter's feed, our poster, this message, or direct them to http://www.freesklyarov.org/ -- we want media coverage of our demonstration. It's GOOD but NOT GOOD ENOUGH just to hand out 500 leaflets. The TV or radio or newspaper interviewing demonstrators will reach many more people than our small group can. All this information will be at: http://two-bit.northpark.edu/free-sklyarov/ FINALLY, be on time, and be ready to be courteous but intensely committed to disseminating this information to the American Public. Do you even KNOW any non-computer users who have even HEARD of the DMCA? We must maket his a national issue -- the DMCA strips the rights of the American Citizen. It's already stripped the rights of a Russian. Questions and comments can be directed to inkblot@geocities.com or pedro@tastytronic.net CANCELLATION ------------ If at any time during the protest, it appears that our goals will be compromised by violence, immaturity, or sabotage, the coordinators of the event will not hesitate to call off the event and send everyone home. There are important issues at stake, most importantly the release of Dmitry Sklyarov. It is in our best intrest to present ourselves in a civil, orderly manner. CONTACT ------- If you have any questions or comments, please contact Nate Riffe or Peter Peterson . -- --------------------------------------------------------------------- FREE DMITRY SKLYAROV -- FBI has imprisioned a Russian software engineer for promoting and teaching the concept of "fair use". And so is whatever it is that you do to pay the bills. So take a laid-back Saturday afternoon and hang out at American Science and Surplus with your friends from UFO Chicago! We're going to be at American Science and Surplus at 5316 N. Milwaukee Avenue between 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM, and after that, at George's Restaurant* at 3224 W. Foster Avenue for food and conversation**. In case you don't know what AS&S is, you're in for a real treat. First, visit their website at: http://www.sciplus.com/ . THey deal in all kinds of things from ant farms to solenoids to radiosondes to posters of ulcers, all for low, low prices! They also have a monthly catalogue that comes out. Here are a few entries to whet your whistles: Gotcha: A loud single-tone siren on a 3" swivel-mount metal bracket. The plastic housing is 4-1/8" x 4" dia. It has 2 6ft leads. It's loud. It's incredibly loud. It's so loud it's disorienting. It's 116dB at 12VDC, and still loud at 3VDC. Scare a burglar witless. Deafen a car thief. Or call the crew in from the south 40. It's loud. 32773 116DB SIREN $12.50 / EACH Killer Magnet This is a killer of a magnet! The oddly shaped rare–earth magnet, only 1" x 1-3/4" x 1/4" thick, can lift 85 lbs of steel. We would have written it up earlier if we weren't afraid to take it near our computer. And if we could have pried it off the metal shelf it was on. We were only able to move the black-painted magnet, which can shatter if dropped onto steel, because it's glued to a 1 1/8" x 2 1/2" metal plate with (2) mounting holes. A nice convenience that offers some leverage. A little advice: Don't stick this on your refrigerator, because the only way you’re going to get it off is to slide it across the finish to the edge. Don't get it too close to your credit cards, computer disks, or vulnerable electronic equipment. Don't trap skin or body parts between two of these magnets. And don't let the warnings discourage you -- this magnet is very powerful, very inexpensive, and very fun! 32676 KILLER MAGNET $9.50 / EACH And such items as: Peltier Heat Pumps! Suction cups! Drawer slides! Bellows Thingies! Tweezers! Clamps! Styrofoam cutters! Chuck keys! Police Tape! Epoxy! Buy everything you need to build a giant, acid-spitting robot (except the acid) in your own backyard! So join us for the junk, and later for the food, or for either one! Directions can be found here http://www.cod.edu/Maps_Loc.htm The show itslef runs from 9.30am to 3.00pm and there is an entrance fee. YOU DO NOT NEED AN ENTRANCE FEE FOR THE LINUXFEST, WE ARE IN A DIFFERENT BUILDING AND COMPLETELY FREE (though we can be bribed for certain special favours with donuts) Linux in assorted formats and flavors, gravity, air (quality variable), tables, AC Power of approx 120V and a goodly amount of network bandwith will be provided. There will hopefully be RedHat and Mandrake CD's available for a small Donation to the cause, we don't know what the cause is, but it must be doing OK by now, look for a man in a Red Hat (TM). Please be prepared to bring everything else yourself, this includes your monitor, power cables, keyboard, and your mum to help you carry it all. We do have a limited amount of extra stuff, no mums or monitors though, so we don't recommend relying on it. We also seem to be doubling as a meeting point for LUNI (Linux Users of Northern Illinois) so please bring along any questions you may have, experiences you wish to share, or cool stuff you want to show off. We normally head off for food (usually noodles) at the end of the day, to wind down and discuss various topics (not all linux related). There is also a lunch area with vending machines providing snacks, soda and coffee, just along the hall from linuxfest, so don't be worried just com along and 'sit a spell', we're fully equipped (now there's a slogan in the making!!). So come be dazzled, by the sparkling wit and repartee of a bunch of guys who don't get out much, but do know a bit about Open Source Operating Systems, we look forward to seeing you there. Linux in assorted formats and flavors, gravity, air (quality variable), tables, AC Power of approx 120V and a goodly amount of network bandwith will be provided. There will hopefully be RedHat and Mandrake CD's available for a small Donation to the cause, we don't know what the cause is, but it must be doing well by now, look for a man in a Red Hat (TM). Please be prepared to bring everything else yourself, this includes your monitor, power cables, keyboard, and your mum to help you carry it all. The system is designed so any of the units can be rebuilt and back online in around half an hour, so I guess that would make it an RAILB system (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Linux Boxen) you can work out your own acronyms if you prefer. Also, I believe there may be a survey taken of what people would like to see in a cohesive linux desktop distro, and Seva may wish to talk briefly on this. Network connections will be provided, if you bring your laptop, there will be a sign in sheet. That's it, starting 2002 with a proper meeting again. herbie ===== ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Linuxfest: http://www.computercentralshows.com/show_schedule.htm#Chicago for schedule ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Such individuals include, but are not limited to: Sean Q. Neakums, also known as the Sacker of Dublin. Through previous communictaions with Sean Neakums, I have been kindly asked to forward this message of his own devising: "Would Chicago like paper or plastic?" CrackMonkey himself, Nicholas Moffitt. Mr. CrackMonkey asks that participants remove all weapons from their personhood before directly addressing him at tonight's event. He fails to ask that people refrain from using the now visible weapons on his personage. Do as you may. Attending under diplomatic and ambassadorial assignment from Texas, Emad El-Haraty. El-Haraty wishes to inform all attendees of his diplomatic immunity from arrest and/or prosecution throughout his stay in the city of Chicago. All men and women, regardless of birth or nobility, are invited to meet at the quant restaraunt referred to as George's by the proprieter. Located at 3224 W. Foster Ave. between Kimball and Kedzie, George's proprieter, George himself, will prepare each meal ordered. As this gathering is not of the formal variety, we the arrangers do not request that you ASAP, as it is known in the vernacular. In fact we discourage against such superflous activities. As some readers may desire to particpate in a ritual ASAP-ing, we ask that you abide by the commonly known rules of ASAP as determined by the trilateral commission of visiting dignitaries: "This dinner invitation, once accepted, is a sacred obligation. If you die before the dinner takes place, the executor of your estate must attend" For more information regarding locale, please have your manservant visit http://ufo.chicago.il.us/ _______________________________________________ UFO Chicago -- Users of Free Operating Systems Free Software Rules -- Proprietary Drools! http://ufo.chicago.il.us/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/ufo From seva@sevatech.com Wed Apr 17 11:40:59 2002 Received: from localhost (seva@localhost) by null.cc.uic.edu (8.11.6/8.11.0) with ESMTP id g3HGexl19085; Wed, 17 Apr 2002 11:40:59 -0500 From: Seva Epsteyn X-X-Sender: seva@null.cc.uic.edu To: "Linux Users Of Northern Illinois (Announce)" Message-ID: X-Foo: Bar MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Subject: [LUNI] ANN: LinuxFest, April 21, 2002 Sender: luni-announce-admin@luni.org Errors-To: luni-announce-admin@luni.org X-BeenThere: luni-announce@luni.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.8 Precedence: bulk Reply-To: luni@luni.org List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: , List-Id: Linux Users Of Northern Illinois - Announcements Mailing List List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: Date: Wed Apr 17 11:41:01 2002 X-Original-Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2002 11:40:58 -0500 (CDT) The monthly LinuxFest (http://luni.org/fest) will be this Sunday 21st April starting 10am finishing approx 3pm in the (Berg) Instructional Centre, which is the building adjacent to the Computer Show at College of DuPage (look for the penguin signs). Directions can be found here http://www.cod.edu/Maps_Loc.htm The show itself runs from 9.30am to 3.00pm and there is an entrance fee. YOU DO NOT NEED AN ENTRANCE FEE FOR THE LINUXFEST, WE ARE IN A DIFFERENT BUILDING AND COMPLETELY FREE (though we can be bribed for certain special favours with donuts).
