[LUNI] not able to ping alias IPs

I have two systems with Public routable IPs connected to the HUB built
into the DSL router.  On the same HUB (media), I have a HP2500C printer
with a MIO card with a non-public IP 172.31.0.7.  There are a couple of
other machines on the 172.31.0.0 network.

On the two systems with public routable IPs, I have configured
172.31.0.11 and 172.31.0.12 resp. as aliases.  I can ping the resp.
systems with their resp. public routable IPs but not on their aliased
IPs.

Any help would be appreciated.  I have attached the results of
ifconfig, arp -a, and ping from the two systems.
