Stty didn't do it because the backspace was working in shell (which
was bash, btw) so it didn't print.
But it was the term setting, thanks for putting me onto it. Mine was
'xterm-color' (which I remember I had to use to get something working
locally), so I just put an export of 'xterm' in my remote .profile and
everything's great.
Just wanted to drop a note to say thanks and show that this was
fixed.
