I am using a Garmin Etrex - not with Linux but with a Palm Pilot 3XE in NMEA mode. Etrex was $120 at CompUSA a year ago. I've seen them on sale for less than $100, maybe $75 on ebay. It works fine
on the dashboard of my car or tucked in the front pocket of a bicycle bag. You can get a serial cable from Blue Hills Innovations http://www.blue-hills-innovations.com/blmstr.htm Etrex style or the
round Garmin style for other Garmin receivers.
