We all know what Knuth said about premature optimization, but I don't know
what he thinks about premature generalization.
On the one hand, generalization of a script (or subroutine, etc.) is usually
a good thing, and all too often happens late, after much effort has been
expended, if it happens at all. On the other hand, generalizing before you
have even one specific implementation tested does seem to be pushing the
pace a bit. On the gripping hand, even when you're generalizing a priori,
it costs some time and effort, and maybe some in performance, so it probably
was a little ahead of its time.

Hmmm. It would be a slight annoyance, but losing /root would hardly have
any noticeable effect here. At least until next time I tried to login as
root from the console.

What cosmic justice there is in that! :-)
