Not to stop someone from tooting my horn... :) (And I do owe you mail,
Martin, I was just busy this weekend...)

He's already using sendmail and linuxconf and I would imagine he's
comfortable with that.  Following my paper would be off in a totally
new direction.  However, if there is a lack of understanding here, and
you wanted to understand something from the ground up, starting from
scratch never hurts.
