The only thing I see today at the Linux USB site <http://www.linux-usb.org/>
seems to hold out hope for you, anyway:

  Q:  Why can't I write to my ZipCD 650 with cdrecord?

  A: You need to have a version of cdrecord of at least 1.10a4.

USB CD-RW drives, most of which are said to work.
