[LUNI] GNOME Configuration

Is there a way to tell GNOME to load the configuration
files from somewhere other than ~ ?  I am working on a
small network using NFS and NIS (YP) for the users. 
Every machine is running a different Distro, and I am
running into problems with the systems because every
system is configured slighty differently, and they
cannot read the users' config files.  Even if I was to
set it up so that there is a script that will read the
machine's hostname to determine which scripts to load.
