I recently wrote a top-secret <g> report for a client on
similar topics. While I can't give you all the details,
I will tell you this:

1. In terms of popularity, as measured by resource counts
in the Google and Yahoo directories, Java is way ahead,
with Perl and C/C++ in nearly a dead heat for second place.

2. In terms of the job market, you're pretty much dead meat
if you have banked on Perl. Everyone uses it, few are
hiring it. Java, followed by C/C++, is what the recruiter
lamers want to hear about. Also, even though at a technical
level many requirements call for standard C, at the recruiting
level it will probably be lumped under C++.

Please note that neither of these consideration help answer
the question "what is the best language to learn and use?"
I'm simply offering a different axis to consider.
