I would expect the impetus came from non-human perusers of the logs who
don't use less (although that hasn't been setup that way by default in
Debian for quite some time...maybe even it never was, and this is an
older memory than I thought (ie., Slackware)). Not that it doesn't
seem reasonable to me to make log-groveling programs deal with simple,
clearly marked compressed logs, but there can be arbitrarily many of
them versus one place to set it not to compress...
