For starting things and restarting them when they exit:
man 5 inittab;
You can also use the perl modules (see previous emails) to
hack the existing /etc/rc.d/init.d/foo shell code into real
wrappers that monitor the stuff they fork off. Be aware that
this will eat process slots and some memory (most of it shared,
not a bit issue on modern systems, if nothing else you'll
exercise the pagefile).
For network services look at inetd/xinetd. In most cases
unless you are running a heavy-duty server you don't need
the network daemons running all of the time (including lpd,
