Reality:
Keep adding machines until you open the window and start
screaming "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it
any more." Then subtract one.
Theory:
Depends heavily on the machines, what they do, how much
care and feeding they require, and how much help you have
(and how much of the help acutally helps). There are shops
running 400+ Sun boxes with a single SysAdmin "in charge"
of things, and 6-8 people working with the poor slob
keeping the boxes off viagra.
There are decent guidelines in the Usenix SysAdmin job
description section -- where they describe what a person
is responsable for given their level of training, etc.
