That is the way to do it anyway. The Linux community is full of choices, there
is something for just about everyone. I personally like Blackbox, which does
not seem to have been mentioned here yet. Fluxbox is based on Blackbox - Fluxbox
has more features. Blackbox and WM are among the simpliest out there. Fluxbox
is right behind those two.
I have been using Blackbox for a long time. The reason I started using it
was I used to do all my work on a slow computer and Blackbox had a low
memory footprint and still ran fast on that old box. When I upgraded, it just
stuck with me and I enjoy it so much why change? So now, even on my dual
AMD MP box with a gig of RAM, I use Blackbox - It's blazing fast.
My point is - some people like simplisity - some like lots of eye candy -
some like a very "professional" look. So here is my run down.
Simple: Blackbox
It's light, fast, while still giving you enough eye candy and
customizability - if that is a word. It does NOT contain features
such as tabbing.. it is very simple. However, plugins can be added
if more functionality is needed.
Professional: Gnome
KDE looks great, but I'm a sucker for Gnome. I think it
just runs better and it is a little faster then KDE. If people
ask me KDE or Gnome? I tell them Gnome.
Eye-Candy: Enlightenment
Enlightenment is the absolute best for eye-candy, in my
opinion. It is not all that light, but for most the computers
out there today it will be just fine.
I hope that helps.
