Also- the FAQ indicates that ReiserFS doesn't have a problem with a
directory containing a large number of files so that may be the ticket.

A couple of points/thoughts here.  Reiser FS works very nicely than ext3
when dealing with 10's of thousands of files.  We benchmarked ext3 and
Reiser for our mail server application and the better performance was with
reiserfs.  http://www.namesys.com/

Depending on the type of object data you are storing, you may want to
consider looking at Zope.  While it's not a database per se, it may do what
you want because it does have a nifty object store.
