As best I can make it out, that is a necessary but not (quite)
sufficent answer.  The second video card is no big deal, and mutiple
pointing devices aren't entirely novel.  The writeup I found dealt with
the keyboard problem by writing a driver (for X) that talked to the raw
USB keybaord device - because the kernel has only one keyboard, so you
can't get at two separate ones through the standard keyboard handler.

There are issues with Linux's virtual terminals, too, that seem to
cause problems.  I was hoping that in the time since he wrote up his
work (using 2.4.very-small and X 4.0) that these issues might have
become less bleeding edge.  :-/

Or that I might be wrong about how hard it is.  Pretty nearly
everything I wrote above (except any misunderstanings I have added)
were gleaned from the how-to I cited.
