[LUNI] PCMCIA hard drive recognition

I need the iBCS package which is in the 2.2 kernel. It is not in the 2.4
kernel and I can not figure out how to get the "abi-ibcs" package to install
& work with my legacy software.

Using RedHat 8.0 and a PCMCIA hard drive (Toshiba MK5002MPL - a 5 Gb
purchased from Dell for ~$160.00) I was able to copy the application
software from the USB hard disk (not recognized by the 2.2 kernel) to the
PCMCIA hard disk.

I have just loaded Version 7.2 (the 2.2 Kernel) and have in the fstab
/dev/hde1 /mnt/users_pcchd VFAT defaults 0 0

I see during boot up a message about the kernel does not recognize /dev/hde1
as a block device, possibly an "insmod driver"?
After loggin in as root I get:
 hde: lost interrupt
 stat: 58
 hde: lost interrupt
 stat: 58
 hde: lost interrupt
 stat: 58

When I reboot the system hangs with the message about rebooting.

When I remove the /dev/hde1 line from the fstab and the reboot I get the
following from the dmesg file:

hde: TOSHIBA MK5002MPL, ATA DISK drive
 ide2 at 0x100-0x107,0x10e on irq 5
 hde: TOSHIBA MK5002MPL, 4794MB w/212kB Cache, CHS=10390/15/63
hde:<6>IrDA (tm) Protocols for Linux-2.2 (Dag Brattli)
 hde: lost interrupt
 hde: lost interrupt
 hde: lost interrupt
 parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [SPP,PS2]
 parport_probe: failed
 parport0: no IEEE-1284 device present.
 lp0: using parport0 (polling).
 hde: lost interrupt
  [PTBL] [649/240/63] hde1
 ide_cs: hde: Vcc = 3.3, Vpp = 0.0
 hde: lost interrupt
 stat: 58
 hde: lost interrupt
 stat: 58
 hde: lost interrupt

After about 3-5 of these error messages it must time out because they go
away.

Any ideas about getting the PCMCIA hard drive useable?
