[LUNI] can't run eclipse on linux

I have RH 8. And am just trying to run eclipse (same problem for motif and gtk
version) I get a dialog box that says.

"Problems during startup. Check the .log file in the .metadata directory of
your workspace."
I can't seem to find any .metadata directory or the .log file. 

Any ideas what i am missing?
