[LUNI] Strange X behavior

I'm setting up Debian on a students old machine and i'm having a **** of a
time getting X working. Its doing something very Odd.

THe video card is a S3 Trio64V. Thats not supported in Xfree86 4 so I
went back to Xfree86 v3.x.x. I'm using xserver-s3 and xfree86-common v3

Before I moved to xserver-s3 I tried xserver-vga/svga and then it would
start X, I would see kde start up and then it would freeze.
ctrl-alt-backspace would not kill it, ctr-alt-f1 would not change to a VT.

I could connect via ssh and kill the Xserver but the screen would stay
frozen. Top shows that X is eating up 99.5% cpu time.

startx 2> Xerror shows what one would normally expect.

Using the xserver-s3 drivers for X I don't even get KDE starting, just a
black screen that can not be restored short of rebooting, though I can
still get in via ssh ect.

So, I think the biggest clue is the Maxed out CPU ussage. Anyone have any
ideas what might be going on here?

Thanks!!
