[Luni]-understanding the Linux/SCO court case

What I would like to know, is $CO going to be able to get royalties for any
Unix derivative OS because "they own the IP". Does the verdict of the AT&T
vs.
*BSD case stop them from doing that? If not, IMHO, they will completely
kill
Unix with their actions and hand over the server market share to M$. I
think that
they are stupid enough to do it. I mean how many of you will shell out $800
or more (SCO Open Server 5, Desktop: $799, SCO Open Server 5, Host system:
$699
(5-user), SCO Open Server 5, Enterprise: $1399 (5-user), 10-User License
Pack: $499)
for Unix? I though so.

If, and I mean if, there is any original Unix code in Linux (which I highly
doubt),
will we be able to remove it like the BSD community did and keep plugging
away,
without having to give $CO a dime...

What about the fact that Caldera sold GPL-based software for years, and now
as $CO
say that the code base is no longer legit? By reselling Linux, haven't they
given
total approved of the code? Either way who bought who in the merger went,
Caldera was
legally selling GPL-based software. Doesn't this void the suit against IBM?

Quoting Richard Reina <richard at rushlogistics.com>:

By not promoting the idea that "this doesn't really matter" (it does matter)
and
"we'll always have FreeBSD even if they destroy Linux" (which may well NOT
be true).

In short, ceasing to live in denial would be a positive first step.

Ceasing to encourage others to live in denial would be an excellent second
step.

Getting the word out to the less technically savvy (those that only see
SCO's
press releases and drive up the already overly-inflated stock prices) would
be a
constructive third step.

Mostly what those of us with no power to directly affect the case can do is
to
stop spreading erroneous memes like the aforementioned ("it doesn't matter,
we'll always have X") and start spreading more useful memes ("this is an
atrocity that must be resisted. If all I can do is speak out about it, then
speak out about it I will do").

Jean.
