Subject: Re: [LUNI] DHCP host name - COMCAST - cable modem

The DHCP_HOSTNAME was required during the HOME.COM iteration of cablemodem
service. (You forgot to insert that one in between Media One and AT&T.)

Thanks for the info - somehow I thought I had forgotten a company but I
couldn't remember ....

The DHCP_HOSTNAME is no longer required to be assigned an IP Address. It
was used as an authentication scheme to prevent unauthorized persons to get
an IP address. In the present state of the Comcast cablemodem system, any
computer is allowed to grab an IP address. Even more importantly, if you
connect a hub straight to your cablemodem, and connect up to 12 computers to
it, all 12 machines can grab a legitimate IP Address ala DHCP without
problems.
Is that intended? Originally (whatever that means ...) I thought one
needed to pay extra for more than
  one IP address.

  Thanks.
