I think that they have been giving out the CO distance "as the crow flies",
and now they are doing actual distance, which includes the length of wire
that zigzags its way through around the city blocks to your house.

What exactly is the "physical test"? I talked to the SBC person to order it
from (and he was knowledgeable enough to answer my questions), then he
conferenced in somebody else (presumably also an SBC technician), telling
her that he had two indications, one saying I could get DSL and another
saying not. She did something (presumably running some kind of test) and
said I was too far from the CO. I asked her if some intermittent problems I
have been having (mostly crosstalk between my two phone lines) could affect
her test, and she said no, her test didn't go as far as my home.

Well, maybe. The whole line distance thing seems to be a little
imprecise, and they won't have a really solid number until they do a
physical test - which isn't going to happen until you actually order,
as I understand it.
