If nothing else, it can be a more accesible place to preserve answers
to those ever-recurring questions. Searching the list archives seems
to be a hit or miss thing if you don't have a key phrase or something
to make the right thread(s) pop out.

And even with the assistance of the great god Google, there can
sometimes be quite a large gap between knowing that something is
explained somewhere out there and actually finding it. Or when you do
find it, it turns out to be too tied up with specifics of a three year
old version of a distro you aren't using, or written at such a general
level that it raises more questions than it answers. There's rarely
any one way of explaining something non-simple that's unreservedly best
for every learner, so there's value in having a varied sort of
duplication.

And anyway, it's not like we'll be squandering rare and irreplacable
resources even if the result is only of limited, local value!

If I had charged one dollar for Samba, it would have never been successful.
The way I was doing stuff was not about money, and I am not at all resentful
of companies that have made money from Samba. At the same time, if they all
went away, we would still have a great community to work on stuff. I think
of the last year or two as being the biggest private investment in public
works in decades. -- Andrew Tridgell
