The new R and R extentions for X will do what you want. However, you
need the very latest X, and very latest libraries (gtk, qt, etc) to
use it to full effect.
RedHat 9 and FC1 support a subset of randr that will just do the
screen resizing. I use that all the time for resizing on my laptop
when I give presentations.
However, with FC1, the best support seems to only come with KDE 3.2.
(Which I have installed thanks to the kde-redhat team.)
