I believe this is caused by lack of support for hardware mixing in
either your chip or it's driver. Although I can't be sure because all
of my sound cards are supported in terms of hardware mixers.
So you have two choices:
1) Use arts or esd sound daemons
2) Setup alsa to do it. The two pages below seem helpful in regards to this.

I recomend option two. Mainly because I don't like esd or arts.
