I'm unfamiliar with kernel-package, as I'm unfamiliar with debian-installer

Are you using kernel-package? It doesn't look like it.
What error do you see when it panics?
FWIW, I just used debian-installer (the new shiny thing) on a box at
work to install sarge. I immediately installed a new 2.6.5 kernel using
kernel-package. It seems to be working ok. I should note that it
didn't add non-free/US and contrib to the sources.list automatically
(didn't even prompt me to add them).
Cheers,
Mike
