General advice is, by design, not going to address every individual
situation. To do otherwise would change it from general advice into a
treatise. Your reaction is not only reasonable, it is expected - it
comes under the heading of applying one's common sense to the general
advice and adapting it to one's particular circumstances. :-)
The most common implementation of SMTP is contained in sendmail.
This program is included free in most UNIX software distributions,
