I use a liteon SOHW-812S and have had no problems with it (running K3B
on Mandrake 10). I had an old sony DVD before and would not recommend
Sony for DVDE (I don't think they manufacture DVD drives they just
resell them). I would strongly suggest not buying a rebranded DVD (such
as Sony) because they usually don't support new firmware versions which
are sometimes needed to give new features and fix problems.
I think many recent movie DVDs are on dual layered so I assume most
drives can read the dual layered (I'm not sure about this though).
A good place for hardware resources on cd/dvd burners is:

Most burners that I've seen recently are IDE. A quick search on
newegg.com shows they don't have any SCSI cdroms for sale,
pricewatch.com shows the cheapest one is more than 3x the price of an
IDE. I'd try and solve the cdrecord problem.
Hope this helps,
Trev
