In case anyone else wants the solution to this, I solved this on a
system with this exact motherboard and controller and the exact problem
of linux distros hanging on loading any version of the driver I could
find.
The solution was to do a bios upgrade of the motherboard, I didn't even
need to do a bios upgrade of the scsi controller. Once I upgraded the
motherboard bios I was away, no more hitches.
Hope this helps future people to venture down this thread since its top
hits on google :)
