You'll be stuck using LILO, as GRUB doesn't boot off LV or MD devices,
or at least I don't think it would the last time I looked. As long as
your rescue disk can deal with LV and MD devices off the bat, you should
be fine. I've had to build custom initrd images in some instances to get
that going, YMMV.
