well, after giving up last night i disconnected power to the cable
modem and it's sitting in the closet unpowered at the moment.  the
linksys' still have power.  so i'll be giving this a shot when i get
home tonight.

i guess this is quite possible, but strange since it worked one minute
and stopped the next; it is a couple years old though...  i 'can' take
the BEFSR41 out of the loop completely as it really isn't needed, but
i'm having the same issue with all three routers.  i can connect to
them, but not to the net through them.  i can also ping each of the
routers through the router i'm currently connected to.

i haven't googled to see if i can 'get inside' my Motorola modem and
see what the settings are in there.  i don't usually disconnect power
from the modem when i've lost connectivity.  i just hit the 'standby'
button on the front and let it power off for a minute or so.  so i
suppose this could be my problem.  any thoughts on that?
