[LUNI] default permission group

Where can one set a default group for a person? For example... A file is in
the group of "peon" .. and I edit it and now its "ubergeek" .. I want the
group to stay at "peon" ?? As far as I can tell, umask does not have anything
to do with groups? I tried the "newgrp" command, it asks for a password, so
I enter my normal shell password and I was rejected. So I must not be understanding
something... 


Group names were changed to protect the innocent.
