If you know there isn't a hand-compiled perl hiding on the system somewhere,
then why not just wack the older stuff?

Yes.
$which perl
/usr/bin/perl
$/usr/bin/perl --version
This is perl, v5.8.6 built for i386-linux-thread-multi
$rpm -q perl
perl-5.8.6-24
I'm running a fairly stock version of Fedora Core 4.
