I run a dual boot (XP and Gentoo, although it's been a while since I
used the Windows Partition) on a Dell laptop.  I did the following when
I got the laptop:

1. Deleted all but the Dell partition (/dev/sda1 on my laptop).  You can
tell the Dell partition because it is not FAT or NTFS.
2. Repartitioned the system using Linux (you can just go through the
partitioning part of the install up to when it writes the partition
table to disk.
3. Installed XP (you need the XP media ($8 more) not the system recovery
disk they normally send).
4. Installed Linux (since I installed Gentoo I added everything to the
GRUB menu myself, Ubuntu may do it automatically)
