I am still not having any luck wit this. When I execute /sbin/ifconfig after trying to put the machine on the LAN ( via the method described below ) everything looks exactly the same as the other LAN machines but no pinging is possible. I'm don't know how to clear the ARP tables. Can someone suggest some additional steps that would help me switch this laptop over from the internet to the LAN without rebooting? So far I execute:
#:/sbin/service network stop
unplug the cable from the router and into the LAN switch
#:/usr/sbin/setup and manually set it to a valid LAN IP
#:/sbin/service network start
Anyone know what else I can do?

Most likely, you have have ARPing issues. Next time try clearing the ARP
table on your linix box -- also check to see if you have ARP from the
other hosts on the network. Other things you may want to check include
your local route table -- ensure the netmasks and interfaces are correct
-- and check your link negotiation -- some cards don't like to auto
negotiate after the fact and will lock themselves at a particular speep
and duplex until they are reinitialized.
Good Luck
