Please set your MUA to wrap lines @ 75 or less chars.

My hunch is that you have a flaky NIC.  I would suggest you try
replacing it.  You can most likely find a replacement for < $10.  It is
worth a try, rather than going nowhere with the present one.

I once had a similar experience with a Realtek NIC.  The driver would
load fine, the LEDs on the NIC and the hub would be properly lit - yet
no traffic went through it.
