[LUNI] Networking question -SOLVED ( I think )

If I unplug and replug the cable before I run /usr/sbin/setup and then do a /sbin/service network restart ( without having first done a /sbin/service network stop ) it works ( I am able to ping local machines and switch back with the same sequence of events ).  I'm still scratching my head as to why this is but atleast I have it working.  Here's what I do know:
 
 unplug and replug the cable from the router to the LAN switch 
 #:/usr/sbin/setup manually set the IP address
 #:/sbin/service network restart 
 
 pinging works

  #:/sbin/service network stop
  unplug the cable from the router and into the LAN switch
  #:/usr/sbin/setup and manually set it to a valid LAN IP
  #:/sbin/service network start
  
 pinging does not work

Let' explore assume for the moment that the card works.
When you can't ping any local machine, type this commands and try to see 
if if there is something not right there. Paste the output in the email 
reply too, maybe someone in the group will figure it out.
iptables -nL
ip route
or if "ip route" does not work, "route -n"
