[LUNI] laptop wireless card--please help!

Hi folks,

First, a disclaimer: I am new to Linux and I am trying
to learn it on my first system now. I loaded it on an
old laptop recently after realizing I had no backups
of the Mac OS or apps anyway and b/c I've been wanting
to see what all the fuss was about. But bear in mind
that any advice you give now risks going over my head.

Here's the deal: I have recently loaded Xubuntu 6.10
(2.6.17-10-powerpc kernel) on a "new world" G3 ppc
powerbook mac (400Mhz "Lombard" (bronze keyboard),
192ram, 6Gb). However, I can't get the wireless to
work and as we all know, a laptop without wireless is
like a plate of French fries without ketchup. Greater
minds at a local LUG meeting informed me that
something in the pcmcia bridge didn't like my
particular card (which works fine on a pc) regardless
of what driver I might try to use. So I find myself in
the market for a new ("old") wireless card, with the
following caveats:

1. any url references I've found that might predict
compatibility are outdated. For example, the following
site suggested Belkin would work (model F5D7010,
Ralink
rt2500 but not rev. 3-5).
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessCardsSupported
also
http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/ftp/SUPPORTED.CARDS
However, my local staples store had only version 10
anyway. Generally, though, I can't even tell the
chipset/version by looking at the shrink-wrapped box.

2. even if I found a compatible card, I don't yet know
how to configure it, b/c I'm new at all this.

I'm thinking that the best solution might be to find a
local linux expert/good Samaritan who has a few extra
older cards on his hands. If we find one that works, I
would be willing to buy it from him or find another
one just like it.

That's why I'm turning to all of you. Is there anyone
out there willing to help a frustrated, would-be
convert?

Thanks in advance,

David
