This is a hunch and I have no experience with this, but I would expect
you would need to recompile some of the system oriented stuff
(screensaver being the example) or probably easier at this stage would
be just to re-install ubuntu with smp support to begin with. Assuming
that certain packages make with response to the kernel used.
(this was not researched, I am just throwing the idea out there)
