Not sure about PCMCIA, but I recently installed an SMC PCI card and a D-Link
PCI card in two desktops, both with the same Aetheros b/g chipset. The SMC
card was half the price of the D-Link, but both worked great with no
significant effort on my part in Kubuntu. The MadWifi open source driver was
built in and found both without trouble.

"If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of
exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an idea,
which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps it to
himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into the possession
of every one, and the receiver cannot dispossess himself of it." -- Thomas
