I would try a live distro like Knoppix to see what hardware is and isn't
recognized first.
Ubuntu/Kubuntu and Mepis can also be used live, and if you like them,
they have an install icon on the desktop.

    I have reciently aquired a Compaq Presario 850.  Don't know if it 
works yet but before I play with it I'd like to know if Linux runs on 
Compaq and what distro would you recomend?
