I have no clue about the questions you asked, but if you have a few
non-game Windows apps that you really need, you might want to look at
Codeweaver's Crossover product.  It adds some stuff on top of Wine (and
improvements in wine that do get pushed back into wine, of course)
aimed at making (mostly) "serious" applications Just Work.  If the apps
you're interested in aren't among those they're paying attention to,
then it may not be any better than using Wine.  It looks like they have
a freely available (time-limted) beta out right now, so it should be
