I have a Fuji S602 and am happy with it.  Fuji and all the other 
manufacturers make many different grades of camera for different 
audiences.  You get what you pay for.

I have never used any of the camera programs.  I plug the camera in to 
the computer via the supplied USB cable, mount it as a USB drive and 
copy the jpeg files to hard drive.  I also have a USB card reader ( the 
602 uses compact flash) but connecting the camera directly seems to work 
better and saves wear on the compact flash socket.  For viewing photos I 
  use Gwenview which came with SuSE 10 and easily links to the GIMP.
