Don't forget to check out the hack-a-thon and come join us after the even at IBM's HQ for the post-flourish social. -- Samir Faci UIC LUG President ---- Blog extract from main website -- Question to the world of Free and Open Source Software: What are my prospects when I graduate? As many of you know by now, for the last few months here at UIC*, we - the ACM* and g/LUG*,- have been eagerly working to put together a conference to discus FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software) as an engine of innovation. The Flourish Conf. will take place next 6-7 of April at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I am a self confessed gnu/Linux user, I love gnu/Linux, free software and even open source - sorry RMS!. I am also a CS student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and curiously enough, even though most of our curricula is done in Unix - we even have 2 RedHat labs here, - it appears as if none of the big players within FLOSS ever come to hire at UIC. Why is that Microsoft comes here semester after semester snatching some of the most brilliant students on campus? Yet, I have yet to see FLOSS big players to come out here looking for people. These has made me wonder: Is there a professional future in FLOSS? .... ... and I know I'm not alone in my wonders. To answer these questions, we have invited quite a few of really smart people from different organizations: Google, IBM, Red Hat, and the FSF, and we are going to have a a chance to hear about the opportunities that FLOSS has to offer for our future. We will have two panels, a talk on GPL v3, a talk on Google's contribution and use of FLOSS, among many other really interesting talks, etc. We have also put together a series of technical talks on FLOSS related technologies and topics, and a couple other really interesting activities to give attendees a chance to meet and to be met: Friday's Social mixer, and Saturday's Hack-a-Thon. This is not only going to be a great time for students around Chicago, this is going to be a great chance for community members, and companies to come together and explore how FLOSS is shaping up our future! Come and join us! Roberto C. I'm doing some work for a customer and it included buying new computers (with Vista since XP wasn't offered anymore). I had such a hard time setting up the network. Sometimes the Vista machines could access the NT 4 machine, but most of the time they couldn't. Then the driver for the HP Laserjet (2015) doesn't exactly work, so I have to use one from another model (3015). At least the CentOS 4.4 server, that I snuck in (shh), works without a problem. One extra(or missing) newline can possibly cause all the problems you are seeing. You must also use the correct newline combination for your host's operating system (the one you are sending mail from). On Windows its backslash-r+backslash-n, on *nix its just backslash-n. The Sourceforge.net version is a bit of a mindstreach for my level of php coding. I am able to attain my goal of emailing myself a file extracted from my MySQL database on a weekly basis as a backup. I still want to learn so if anybody has another approach please let me know. If I do get to the point of listserving for my club (an idea that I have already had) I will use the phpmailer class. Many thanks to all who looked and made suggestions. I've been administering RHEL 3 & 4 servers in production for a couple of years now, so I pretty much know what's going on, but I was hoping I could score some advice on the exam itself. According to my research, the best study guide is Michael Jang's book on the subject, a new version of which is due out in June. Unfortunately, the old version is dated back to '04, so I'm not sure how much help it will provide for the Red Hat 5 exam. Anyone else know of any good materials? I have to be careful what I say here, due to my employer. Much of the material on the internet is terribly out of date (rhce2b.com is notably bitrotted). Be very comfortable actually performing the items listed here: https://www.redhat.com/training/rhce/examprep.html Know RHEL 5, know Red Hat specifics, and know them cold. You will be asked to do these things. Don't bother memorizing man pages. Be familiar with the topics covered in RH133 and RH253: https://www.redhat.com/training/rhce/courses/rh133_content.html https://www.redhat.com/training/rhce/courses/rh253_content.html And above all, remain calm. It's not an easy exam. I've seen very smart people get flustered on a single item, and spend way too much time trying to get it, and fail as a result. Presumably if this had been a real email the verify would have succeeded on a later retry... but if the sending MTA didn't bother to retry (as the RFC calls for but, so I've heard, some busy sites don't [always] do) the mail would, of course, never get delivered. I know I can modify the font size for KDE, but I was wondering if anyone else may have noticed this if they're using a more recent nvidia driver. I'm just wondering if the font itself was changed somehow or if the driver is displaying font sizes differently. I'm currently using a 1280x1024 resolution on KDE 3.5.5 (Gentoo). IBM A30 Thinkpad I've installed both Deb stable 4.0 (Etch) and Ubuntu (6.10 and 7.04). If I "restart" in any of the aforementioned distros, my machine reboots, but I get no gui. In Ubuntu, I hear the beep indicating its waiting for userid/password. The machine does the normal reboot sounds, i.e. I hear it spin the floppy drive, but I don't see the bios screen, no grub screen, no dmsg stuff scrolling. The screen lights from and otherwise dark, but nothing displays. If I do a "shutdown" as opposed to a "restart", it shuts down fine. My pea brain says I'm having some issue with X, but don't know what, since it works from a cold boot. Suggestions? If you're just learning for you, and you don't care about professional certifications, I would go to your local community college and see what kind of Unix/Linux classes they offer. I took two quarters of Unix at COD, and found it extremely helpful -- plus, it introduced me to Linux around 10 years ago :) If you want professional certification to do this for a living, you could try the RHCT and RHCE courses offered by Red Hat. Not as comprehensive as the community college route, but more recognized by industry. Good luck!
