About the Position
This position is responsible for the technical integration and operation
of new applications and features into the Orbitz testing and production
environments. The candidate will become an in-depth subject matter expert
(SME) on the operational and management aspects of the product. The
individual will work closely with systems/network engineering, application
support, development and operations personnel to develop and deploy
monitoring, alerting, escalation, maintenance and reporting processes and
procedures for the systems in accordance with Orbitz strategies. Will
also develop and document knowledge of the applications interactions and
operating relationships with other Orbitz application functions and
features and work with those teams to guarantee consistency of approach.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Establish and maintain implementation and monitoring requirements
for the application, and proactively work with development staff to
continuously improve its operational stability and response
* Establish and maintain custom management and maintenance modules for
control and manipulation of the applications
* Establish alarming and escalation paths for the application to
assure aggressive availability goals are met
* Responsible for training and documentation of all operational
aspects of the application and will guarantee clean integration with
the Unix and application systems monitoring strategy and tools
* Validate operational functionality through testing processes
* Develop an extensive knowledge and understanding of the Orbitz
server and network environments, monitoring tools and methodologies
* Responsible for coordinating and directing site personnel during
application or function outages; this also includes directing the
follow-up and delivery of outage reports, root cause analyses and
identifying methods to prevent similar issues from recurring
* Responsible for communicating effectively with designers and
developers, project managers, Orbitz business and executive
management, our partners, and vendors
* Manage multiple tasks and projects
* Work closely with the 24x7 team mentoring through documentation and
training
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Bachelor's degree or related field or related, equivalent experience
* Demonstrated experience managing projects and tasks through completion
* 5+ years UNIX System Administration experience with a large Linux or
SUN/Solaris environment in a high availability, 24x7 environment;
e-commerce experience required
* Experience with high-end system and network monitoring tools,
automation of operational tasks, scripting, debugging and root cause
problem resolution
* Experience dealing with multiple down-stream suppliers, partners and
back-end system connection and monitoring processes
* Strong knowledge of TCP/IP and networking principles as well as web
technologies
* Previous experience in application development or deployment,
configuration management, Unix application support, and relational
databases
* Must have exceptional written, verbal and presentation skills and be
able to operate well in a high volume, rapidly changing environment
* Must be willing to work outside normal business hours as site needs
arise
* Strong communication and team skills
