[LUNI] GUI fails to start when restarting etch or ubuntu

Hi,

I've been a'googling but can't find my answer.

IBM A30 Thinkpad

I've installed both Deb stable 4.0 (Etch) and Ubuntu (6.10 and 7.04).
If I "restart" in any of the aforementioned distros, my machine
reboots, but I get no gui.  In Ubuntu, I hear the beep indicating its
waiting for userid/password.

The machine does the normal reboot sounds, i.e. I hear it spin the
floppy drive, but I don't see the bios screen, no grub screen, no dmsg
stuff scrolling.  The screen lights from and otherwise dark, but
nothing displays.

If I do a "shutdown" as opposed to a "restart", it shuts down fine.

My pea brain says I'm having some issue with X, but don't know what,
since it works from a cold boot.

Suggestions?
