[LUNI] GUI fails to start when restarting etch or ubuntu

Do you have a monitor plugged in as well ?

If not, try doing a lcd/monitor switch using the Fn key combo. Could it 
be that Xorg is switching over to the svga connector ?
I have a similar problem (only the reverse) with a laptop I am playing 
with that doesn't have an lcd any more, so every boot it starts with the 
external monitor then reverts back to internal and I have to switch it 
back manually each time (until I figure out what to do with xorg)
