[LUNI] Multimedia open source solutions

Hi,
I am faced with a chellenge which - I believe - could be addressed using Linux
and one of the multimedia capabilities to be found in open source.
Unfortunately I am not very good at open source multimedia options, so I am
seeking advice from those of you having done something like this (and willing
to share, of course ;))
Requirements: multimedia streaming (flash content, streaming video, slides,
etc.) from a central location to remotely placed LCD monitors (large size >=
42"). The content should be transferable at different times than when it is
supposed to be played, because of already overloaded WAN links ==> end points
have to have the capability of storing and then schedule/cron-playing content
on the LCDs.
The approach I envision in resolving this is by using small factor PCs, to be
used to connect to the monitors (if multiple LCDs - I wonder if I could use
multi-head card, with a solution capable of playing different content on
different LCDs).
Does anybody have any recommendations for software and/or a
multimedia-oriented distribution, and/or additional advice(s) on how to
tackle a problem like the one described?
TIA,
-- Stef
