Just thought I'd add an update to this.  I just got my T61 yesterday. 
Installed Debian Lenny on it. For the most part it was pretty painless. 
Everything on it up and running, sound, wireless.  The only thing I had to 
compile was some alsa bits from.  Right now I have the 4965AGN working 
though ndiswrapper, seems to work pretty well.  The other option would be 
to roll my own kernel and add in the modules myself.  All in all, getting 
everything to work was pretty easy.  And I have to say that I'm pretty 
impressed with it so far.
