Good thinking.  LiveCD has saved me a few times.

At the end of the day that is what matters.   I am sure most of us have 
had to resort to some sort of hack to make some application or the 
other work properly in the distro of our choice.  I recall one 
application needed some special fonts and their path were hard coded in 
the app, different from the font paths of the distro.  Rather than muck 
around with the source code, I simply created a link to the font dir 
and presto the application generated graphs flawlessly :)
