Well, I resolved the problem. As I had suspected, especially after a couple of the replies I got, that if I were able to swap out the new driver for the old, or in this case, the file which points to the driver, the system would return to normal. I've done this a ton of times on WinNT, 2k, and XP boxes after folks played with the graphics settings, but being new to Linux, I didn't know where the files were, or what they were called.
What I determined was that, when I installed the ATI package last night, the existing "xorg.conf" file was rewritten to "xorg.conf.old" and a new one written to take its place. I (as root through "su") moved the "xorg.conf" file to "xorg.conf.old2" and then moved the "xorg.conf.old" file to "xorg.conf". After this, I said a couple of Our Father's and Hail Mary's and did a "shutdown -r now", holding my breath until I saw the graphic login screen reappear. ;-)
Anyway, thanks all for your cards and letters. I've got several books that are quickly going to become my steadfast companions. They are "Running Linux," "Linux for Windows Addicts," "Linux Cookbook" (although I want to get better at boiling Linux water first), and finally, "Linux Phrasebook."

OK, looks like you want to understand where the problem is. When you
start X windows it complaints that there is no screen section. Look in
the older xorg.conf files (ls -l -t /etc/X11) for the "screen" sections
and compare them with the active xorg.conf. That should give you an
idea of what is missing in xorg.conf. Perhaps you can try hand editing
the file and add the screens section and see if it works.
