It's been dependent on a free piece of junk computer for the past 5 years just fine. :-)  

Seriously though, even without the server my desktops all have static addresses (required for port forwarding for games and such), and configuring them all statically is not something I should have to deal with, and haven't had to for years.  I don't see why I need to start now.
